Prebendalism, similiar to the spoils system, is very prevelent in Nigerian government. The chart at the bottom of the page exemplifies how extreme it has become, one man was able to steal 3 billion dollars from the governmentin four years and not be caught? That is not only shocking, but he then uses this stolen money to finance its secrecy, paying off those in the government who knew.

This chart illustrates the highly corrupt nature of Abacha's regime. By exchanging political favors between wealthy and powerful military and financial officials, he seems to have furthered his power (though certainly not his legitimacy as a ruler).

He would do them political favors and bribe them in exchange for their loyalty. This is why Nigeria is as corrupt as it is today, for such trends have continued.

Prebendalism is like the spoils system, it is the exchanging of favors between leaders and clients. The chart shows many leaders under Abacha and shows what they have done for him. For example, one man got a position in the government for helping the Abacha family hide their money laundering. Each man in the government has done something for abacha, so Abacha awards them with a political position in return.
